The Tiwis have always lived separately from the mainland and because of this they have developed an art form that is totally different from the aboriginal art you will find elsewhere in Australia.   In the town of Nguiu Tiwi art decorates everything. 

You fly into Nguiu, Bathurst Island Airport (BRT) and Tiwi art is everywhere! Far left - the airport terminal.  Middle - the bathrooms.

They make wonderful sculptures of birds and replicas of the pukamani burial poles. 

The Tiwis are world-famous for their batik and silk screening.

There are several workshops on the island.  We visited the Ngaruwanajirri workshop.
