Queenland’s Outback begins north of the Great Dividing Range and continues on to the Northern Territory and South Australia in the west and New South Wales in the south. This is where Qantas was born, where fossils of dinosaurs dating back 130 million years are located, where Crocodile Dundee’s Walkabout Creek Hotel is located and where you can find aboriginal rock paintings and artifacts dating back 20,000 years. This region has towns by the name of Mount Isa, McKinlay, Kynuna, Winton, Longreach and Quilpie. There are two seasons in the outback - wet and dry, with rain coming during the summer months.

Quilpie (population 760) is world famous for their boulder opals. These are found in the mining belt that stretches from Quilpie to Winton in the north.

The town of Winton is where “Waltzing Matilda”, written by Banjo Paterson, was first performed at the North Gregory Hotel above.

The Combo Waterholes, southeast of Kyuna, are believed to be the site that inspired Banjo Paterson to write Waltzing Matilda while on a visit to Dagworth Station in 1895. Now there is a Combo Waterholes Conservation Park.

Qantas was born in the Queensland Outback in Winton in 1920. Longreach now has the Qantas Founders Outback Museum and above is the original hanger.

Riversleigh Fossil Centre in Mount Isa tells the story of the animals who roamed this portion of Australia approximately thirty million years ago. Riversleigh Station is 250 kms. north of Mount Isa.

Longreach also is home to the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame & Outback Heritage Centre.

Lawn Hill National Park, near Mount Isa is like an oasis in the middle of the desert!






		There are two Royal Flying Doctor locations in the Queensland Outback. One is located in Mt. Isa and the other in Longreach. In Cloncurry you can visit John Flynn Place, who was the founder of the RFDS.




	The Richmond Marine Fossil Museum displays fossils from the area that date back 120 million years.
