Katherine, population 9,450, is 196 miles south of Darwin along the Stuart Highway. People make the trek to Katherine so they can cruise the gorge, located in Nitmiluk National Park, a short drive from Katherine. A string of 13 gorges cut by the Katherine River through the Arnhem Land Plateau, it is a huge area about the size of France. You can visit the area by small boat or helicopter. |
