Hobart is Australia's southernmost capital city and also the capital of Tasmania. The city has a population of 170,000 and was founded in 1804 at the mouth of the Derwent River. Hobart is a riverside city with a busy harbour. Its mountain backdrop offers fine views over the beautiful Georgian sandstone buildings, many of which were built by the convicts that settled the island. There are numerous parks and compact suburbs. Hobart has a thriving arts and crafts scene, the highlight of which is Salamanca Market on Saturdays. The city lies at the foot of Mt. Wellington.
