The state is renowned for its wine growing areas - the Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Coonawarra and McLaren Vale. It is also the home of Kangaroo Island, 70 miles southwest of Adelaide, and one of the prime spots for viewing Australian wildlife in a natural setting. North of Adelaide lies the Flinders Ranges, the famous Prairie Hotel, Wilpena Pound, the Outback and the unique opal-mining town of Coober Pedy where the summer temperatures can reach up to 122 degrees and most of the residents live underneath the ground! The Murray River flows into South Australia from Victoria. Coorong National Park is a water bird sanctuary that rivals Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory. The state has four seasons, and the summers in Adelaide can range from 82 to 63 degrees, while the winters range from 61 to 46 degrees.
