MARZAMEMI

Part of the fun of a road trip, is seeing the scenery and being able to stop in small towns.  We took the coastal route to Ragusa and came upon Marzamemi on the Ionian Sea.  Marzamemi is a tiny tuna fishing village, (population less than 500). The tuna factories closed in 1969 but the charm of the village remains.   We were so far off the tourist route, that there were few American tourists, mostly Italian and Sicilian tourists.  Marzamemi is  centered around a plaza - Piazza Regina Margherita and below are some photos of this wonderful small village..

Much of the land is covered with greenhouses (left) since this is a big agricultuaral area.  Occasionally you come across vineyards and wineries.   We knew nothing about Marzamemi but decided to visit the small town and we were so impressed with this charming village.

It was in Marzamemi  that I found some authentic Sicilian art.   All over Sicily you see ceramic two heads (called Moorish heads) and one of the stories is that a Saracem Arab merchant fell in love with a local girl.  They have a passionate love affair until the day she discovered that he had a wife and children waiting for him at home.  In a fit of passion, she cuts off his head and then uses his  head as a vase in which she grows basil which flourishes in his head.  Notice the chair and the barrel both have images of the  head.
