Creating memories.....one vacation at a time!

RAGUSA IBLA

The drive from Siracusa to Ragusa takes about an hour and a half.   Ragusa is located on a high limestone hill (980 feet) and is located between two valleys.  Ragusa has two parts - Ragusa Ibla where the old city is located and Ragusa Superiore which is above Ragusa Ibla and is the newer portion of Ragusa.  It is called a town of two souls.  The town dates back to the 2nd millennium BC and has influences from the Greeks, Romans, Arabs and the Normans occupations.  It is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.   In 1693, the town was devastated by an earthquake and the town was rebuilt in two sections - Ragusa Ibla  and Ragusa Superiore and  many of the Baroque buildings in Ragusa Ibla date to that time.

Ragus Ibla  became popular  when the Inspector Montalbano series was filmed here.  We stayed two nights  in Ragusa Ibla.

The mountain villages are often overlooked on a trip to Sicily but we highly recommend that you include one or two in a self-drive.  You will not be disappointed!
