Noto is in south-western portion of Sicily and is 20 miles southwest of Siracusa at the foot of the Iblean Mountains. In 1693 the town was demolished by an earthquake and the new town was built 16 km away from the ruins, which can still be seen if you go to Antica Noto. Noto is an UNESCO Heritage site and is famous for its 18th century Baroque buildings which were built out of soft tufa stone and appear golden. |
