Creating memories.....one vacation at a time!

HUSAVIK, THE WHALE CAPITAL OF ICELAND, GODDAFOSS, GEOTHERMAL AREA
 & LAKE MYVTAN
We arrived into Husavik  in North Iceland in Skjafandi Bay at 7:30 pm.  Husavik means “Bay of Houses” and this town of over 2,000 people was settled before 874AD.  The town has a wooden church, Husavikurkirja which was built in 1907  and overlooks a very picturesque harbor.   Husavik is considered the best place to see whales since their operators have a 100% success rate in seeing whales.  At  8 pm we went whale watching on a boat called Sylvia. That night we saw many whales who were surfacing and blowing water.  We even saw one whale breeching.

The next morning we visited Godafoss waterfall which is on the Ring Road and is part of the Diamond Circle..   The waterfall was named Godafoss “Waterfall of the Gods” because when Iceland adopted Christianity, the man behind this decision, Porgeir Ljosvetningagodi,  threw his old Norse idols into the waterfall.   The waterfall is part of the Skalfandafljot River.
