Creating memories.....one vacation at a time!

ISAFJORDUR IN THE WESTFJORDS
The Westfjords are located in the extreme northwest of Iceland.  The only sizable town in this area is Isafjordur.  If you are doing a self-drive you can reach the Westfjords by taking a ferry from Stykkisholmur in the Snaefellsnes Peninsula and arrive at Brjanslaekur  and then drive to Isafjordur or you can arrive in Isafjordur on a cruise ship like we did.   The town is built right next to soaring mountains in the fjord and because of that has been subject to avalanches.  We took a walking tour of the town and visited a fish market where we learned about salted cod from a descendant from the Vikings in his fish store.  We walked through the town  and got a first-hand look at how the people lived in this small town.  Photos below were taken in Isafjordur.

We saw our first waterfall, Dynjandi,  “The Thunderer”, near Hrafnseyri. It is the largest waterfall in the Westfjords and is 330 feet tall.  Photo on the right.   There are five other waterfalls created from Dynjandi. The picture below is the fjord leading to the waterfall.

We also visited in Hrafnesyri a recreated turf house of Jon Sigurdsson, who was leader of the independence movement against Denmark.  The church in this little town dates back to 1886.
