SIGLUFJORDUR, “SIGLO”, THE CAPITAL OF HERRING FISHING Siglufjordur is the northern most town in Iceland is located in the Siglufjordur fjord and high and dramatic mountains tower over the town. The tunnel through the fjord Hedinsfjordur opened in 2010, the town has been able to be experienced by people doing self-drives along the Ring Road. Siglufjordur has the largest seafaring and industry museums in Iceland, the Herring Era Museum, The town’s importance in the herring industry was from 1867-1969 when the herring stopped coming. We were treated to the townspeople performing “Herring Rush”which told the story of the Herring Girls who lived together and cut and gutted the herring. Afterwards we toured the five museum buildings. Below you will see photos of Siglo, the Herring Girls, where they slept (two women to one bunk) and one of the herring boats.
